The U23C is a a General Electric locomotive equipped with a 2250HP engine.
In 1972 were manufactured the first locomotives, in a total of 170 and they were delivered in two original batches. The first one, produced in GE-Campinas was responsible for 80 locomotives (3801 to 3880), of 180 tons. The second one had 90 locomotives (3901 to 3990), which 20 of them with 165t, (3901 to 3920) were imported from GE-USA and placed in Cachoeira Paulista (SP). For this reason, they were so called "Cachoeirinhas". In Brazil they had only their trucks assembled.
At RFFSA, the U23C were mainly directed to the freight transport, specially iron ore, but they were also used in the passenger transport like Vera Cruz (BH-RJ) and Santa Cruz (SP-RJ), connecting important cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte
Nowadays, the U23C´s represent a significant share of MRS´s locomotives array.
